Fried Dried Onion (Camping Prep)

Keep your trail meals fragrant with this make-ahead onion! This onion isn't just peeled and chopped—it's fried too, so it adds far more aroma to soups and mains than plain dried onion. Try making this veggie prep—it's ideal to pack for long hikes and camping trips, when you can't carry a lot of food.

    1. Tip the dried onion into a bowl. 2. Drizzle with the oil and lemon juice, stir, and let it sit for 30 minutes. 3. Fry it in a preheated skillet until browned—no need to add extra oil to the pan. 4. Turn the fried onion out onto a paper towel to blot up the excess oil. 5. Dry the onion again in a dehydrator; on the lowest setting I dry it for 2–3 hours. Now it's ready to store. When you add it to a dish, let it cook (simmer) for 15 minutes. Enjoy your meals!
