  • This is a wonderful Chinese sweet sauce that pairs well with any meat dish. It's also great with a handful of finely chopped canned pineapple stirred in — that makes it even tastier and richer. Finely chop the onion, ginger root, and garlic, then sauté them quickly in a hot skillet with the vegetable oil for about two minutes. In a separate bowl, stir together the tomato paste, brown sugar, soy sauce, vinegar, sherry, and juice. Add the mixture to the skillet, stir, and bring to a boil. Separately, stir the cornstarch into the cold water, then whisk it into the sauce. Bring back to a boil and simmer it down to whatever consistency you like best — this sauce works either thin or thick.
