Buckwheat and Rice Porridge Cooked in Water

This porridge wins everyone over and brings the whole table together. Friendship for the win! Anyone can cook a single grain, but combining a few kinds in one pot — now that's something a little different.

Cooking method

    Cut the meat into pieces.

    Peel the carrots and cut them into matchsticks.

    Peel the onions and slice them into thin quarter-rings.

    Heat the oil in a skillet.

    Add the onions and fry until partly softened.

    Add the carrots and cook briefly, covered.

    Add the meat, stir, and simmer until the sauté is nearly cooked through.

    As it cooks, season to taste with salt, pepper, and the dried garlic.

    When the sauté is done, take it off the heat and stir.

    In a large baking dish, layer the grains and the meat sauté.

    Pour in boiling water to about ½–¾ inch (1–2 cm) above the grains and the meat-and-vegetable mixture. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

    Stir the contents gently, without disturbing the layers. Place in a 375°F (190°C) oven for about 40 minutes. The porridge is ready when all the liquid has been absorbed.
