Sauce for Fish Cakes

Quick, made from simple ingredients, and very tasty! This sauce for fish cakes is mayonnaise-based and comes out thick and smooth. Its flavor and aroma are nicely rounded out by fish seasoning. You can make extra and keep it in the fridge for several days.

  1. Step 1:

    Step 1

How do you make sauce for fish cakes? Gather everything you'll need. A fish seasoning blend is the ideal choice for the dry spices. They're usually sold as a ready-made mix.

  2. Step 2:

    Step 2

Put the mayonnaise in a small bowl and squeeze in a little lemon juice. Then add salt, sugar, and the fish seasoning. Go by your own taste with the salt, since mayonnaise is already fairly salty on its own.

  3. Step 3:

    Step 3

Chop the pickles very finely. You can grate them, of course, but then they'll release a lot of juice and the finished sauce will turn out runnier. Add the chopped pickles to the bowl with the mayonnaise.

  4. Step 4:

    Step 4

Rinse a few sprigs of dill under running water, pat dry, and chop finely. Add the chopped dill to the bowl with the sauce as well.

  5. Step 5:

    Step 5

Mix all the ingredients thoroughly so they're evenly combined. I recommend chilling the finished sauce a little before serving.

  6. Step 6:

    Step 6

Put the sauce in a gravy boat and serve it with the fish cakes. All the ingredients go together so well that you couldn't dream up a more perfect sauce for fish cakes! Enjoy!

  • Since everyone's tolerance for salt, sweetness, bitterness, heat, acidity, and spice is different, always add spices and seasonings to your own taste! If you're using a seasoning for the first time, keep in mind that some are especially easy to overdo (chili pepper, for example).
  • It's better to make the mayonnaise yourself - it'll be tastier and healthier. See some interesting homemade mayonnaise recipes here. You can also use sour cream or plain yogurt as a dressing instead of just mayonnaise. Use them on their own or mix them with mayonnaise in any proportion you like - this lowers the calorie count of the dish.
  • If you use ready-made spice blends, be sure to read the ingredients on the package. These blends often already contain salt - keep that in mind, or you risk over-salting the dish.
