Cooking method

  1. Step 1:

    Step 1

How do you make a layered salad with crab sticks? Gather the ingredients. If the crab sticks were frozen, thaw them first. Boil the eggs. Any hard or semi-hard cheese will do; the main thing is that it's tasty, good quality, and free of milk-fat substitutes. You can use one large tomato or a few small cherry tomatoes.

  2. Step 2:

    Step 2

Unwrap the crab sticks. The film each one is wrapped in sometimes peels off poorly. To make it easier, hold the sticks over steam for 1–3 seconds. Cut the crab sticks into small cubes. I'll be assembling the salad in a plating ring, but you can do it without one, just layering the ingredients. Set the ring on a plate. Add the crab sticks as the first layer and press them down with a spoon. Pipe a crosshatch of mayonnaise on top.

  3. Step 3:

    Step 3

Peel the boiled eggs and grate them on a coarse grater. Add them as the second layer. Pipe a mayonnaise crosshatch over them too. To make it easier, put the mayonnaise in a sturdy bag, a piping bag, or an ordinary zip-top bag and snip off the tip.

  4. Step 4:

    Step 4

Wash the tomatoes, dry them, and cut them into small cubes. Add them as the next layer. No mayonnaise is needed here.

  5. Step 5:

    Step 5

Grate the cheese on a coarse grater and add it as the top layer. Press the cheese down with a spoon. Pipe a mayonnaise crosshatch on top. Put the salad in the fridge for half an hour to chill a little.

  6. Step 6:

    Step 6

Lift off the ring (if you used one) and garnish the salad however you like. Serve. Enjoy!

  • How do you buy crab sticks the right way? Always check the product's expiration date. Surimi (minced white fish) should be listed first in the ingredients. Important! Don't buy the product if there's frost on it — that's a sign it's been refrozen. Fresh sticks should be free of gray and yellow spots, firm, and slightly moist. If the product feels sticky, it's gone bad.
  • How do you hard-boil eggs? To keep the eggs from cracking as they cook, put them in cold water and cook them over low heat. Boil the eggs for 9 minutes after the water comes to a boil, then cover them with cold water to cool. The sudden change in temperature makes the shells easier to peel.
  • It's better to make the mayonnaise yourself — it'll be tastier and healthier. See some interesting homemade mayonnaise recipes here. You can also dress the salad with sour cream or plain yogurt instead of mayonnaise. Use them on their own or mixed with mayonnaise in any ratio you like — that will cut down the calories.
