A whimsical holiday appetizer made from simple ingredients! This Turtle salad with chicken and walnuts will be the star of the holiday table. You can make it for kids, and with kids, and have fun decorating it. It's tasty and quick to make!
Cooking method
-
Step 1:
How do you make Turtle salad? First, get everything ready for our salad. Boil the chicken fillet in lightly salted water (if you decide to use it). Hard-boil the eggs and cool them. Choose apples to your taste — almost any will work here: sweet or sweet-tart.
-
Step 2:
Cut the chicken fillet (boiled, fried, or smoked) into small cubes.
-
Step 3:
Peel three of the four eggs. Set one aside for now. Separate the whites and yolks. Grate them separately on a fine grater.
-
Step 4:
Grate the cheese and the peeled fresh apples.
-
Step 5:
Peel the onion, chop it, and pour boiling water over it to take away the unwanted sharpness.
-
Step 6:
Rinse the onion in cold water and drain it completely. Pat the onion dry.
-
Step 7:
Put the walnuts in a plastic bag, set it on a cutting board, and crush them with a rolling pin.
-
Step 8:
You can also just chop them with a knife into coarse crumbs.
-
Step 9:
Start building the salad on a wide, flat plate. The first layer should be the grated egg whites.
-
Step 10:
Spread the chicken fillet over the egg whites.
-
Step 11:
Spread the chicken layer with mayonnaise.
-
Step 12:
Add the onion on top.
-
Step 13:
Sprinkle with the grated apple.
-
Step 14:
Spread the apple layer with mayonnaise.
-
Step 15:
Sprinkle on the grated cheese, covering the whole surface of the salad and shaping it into a "turtle." I do this with my hands.
-
Step 16:
Sprinkle the cheese with the grated yolk and spread with mayonnaise.
-
Step 17:
Sprinkle the salad with walnuts to mimic a turtle's shell.
-
Step 18:
Decorate the salad however you like.
-
Step 19:
Remember we still have one whole egg left? I made a turtle head out of the egg, with peppercorns and a piece of red-skinned apple.
-
Step 20:
For the legs, use walnut halves. With mayonnaise, pipe a net pattern over the turtle's "shell" and garnish with onion rings on top.
-
Step 21:
Our delicious salad is ready.
-
Step 22:
Good luck making it! Enjoy — and so will your friends!
- Turtle salad is a recipe I find rather fun-looking. Maybe that's why I decided to make it one day. It turned out surprisingly delicious — don't think this salad is all about looks. Turtle salad with chicken and nuts is great for kids and grown-ups alike, as long as you're not shy about trying dishes with an unusual appearance.
- Sometimes we just feel like making a salad — but not just any chicken salad, rather something that would please not only us but our friends too. Let me share with you what's called Turtle salad; I came across the recipe completely by chance, but I think this dish will appeal to many.
- To keep your eyes from stinging when you slice onions, rinse the onion and the knife with cold water. Your cutting board won't pick up the unpleasant onion smell if you rub it with a slice of lemon before cutting.
- It's better to make the mayonnaise yourself — it'll be tastier and healthier. See some interesting homemade mayonnaise recipes here. You can also dress the salad with sour cream or plain yogurt instead of mayonnaise. Use them on their own or mixed with mayonnaise in any ratio you like — that will cut down the calories.
