Spicy Pickled Plums for Winter

A delicious, unusual, and fragrant plum appetizer! These spiced pickled plums are a very simple, easy recipe — quick to make and hardly any effort. I love plums and try to put up plenty for the winter. I'd already made jam and compote when a neighbor passed along this recipe. Tender and appetizing, they'll add some variety to your winter menu.

    1. Wash and sort the plums. Prick each one in a few spots so they pickle better. 2. Sterilize the jars ahead of time, by steam or in the oven. Pack the plums into the jars, pour over boiling water, leave for 5-6 minutes, and drain. 3. Make the syrup: add the sugar to the water and bring to a boil. Add the spices to the plums and pour over the syrup. 4. Seal the jars, turn them over, and cover with something warm. Once cooled, move them to a cool place.
