Filo Baklava with Almonds and Oranges
Sweet baklava with Middle Eastern flair — give it a try! I'd always wanted to make baklava and kept hunting for a recipe for a truly delicious version. I made this one with filo dough, and I'm thrilled — sweet and fragrant! This is the best of the best!

- Run the walnuts through a meat grinder along with a quarter of the sugar. 2. Stir half of the lemon and orange juice into the nut mixture. 3. Make a sugar syrup from the rest of the sugar and 150 ml (about ⅔ cup) of water. Add the remaining lemon and orange juice and simmer for 20 minutes over moderate heat. 4. Melt the butter (I cook it until it turns clear). 5. In a greased pan, lay down a sheet of filo and spread the nut filling over it. Repeat until the pan is full. 6. Brush the top layer with the beaten egg. 7. Score the baklava into your serving pieces — I cut it into diamonds, and top each diamond with an almond. 8. Bake for 15 minutes at 350°F (180°C). 9. Take it out, pour over the sugar syrup, and bake for another 10 minutes. Serve the baklava chilled. Enjoy with tea!
