Homemade Chocolate-Hazelnut Spread (Nutella-Style)
Delicious — the whole family will love it! This homemade chocolate-hazelnut spread comes out really, really tasty, about as close to the original Nutella as you can get. Its big plus is that it's clearly more wholesome than the store-bought kind! And the homemade version is easy on the family budget too, since it uses the most basic ingredients.
Cooking method
-
Step 1:
How do you make chocolate-hazelnut spread? Get the ingredients ready. Adjust the amount of sugar and nuts to taste. If you like it sweeter, just add more sugar; you can also use more or fewer hazelnuts. By the way, if you don't have hazelnuts on hand, any other nut will work.
-
Step 2:
In a heavy-bottomed saucepan, combine the powdered milk, sugar, cocoa powder, vanilla sugar, and a pinch of salt. Pour in the milk in small additions, stirring well so there are no lumps. Set the pan over heat and bring the contents to a boil, stirring.
-
Step 3:
While the mixture heats, chop the hazelnuts as finely as you can, however is easiest for you. I toasted the hazelnuts in a dry skillet until golden first, then ground them. You can use a blender, meat grinder, grater, mortar, or rolling pin. A coffee grinder works best, but for that you'll need to toast the nuts first.
-
Step 4:
Take the pan of milk mixture off the heat and add the ground hazelnuts.
-
Step 5:
Add the butter in pieces too, and stir everything with a whisk until the butter melts and the mixture is smooth.
-
Step 6:
Put the pan back over heat and bring to a boil, stirring (keep the heat very low so it barely simmers). Cook for another 5 minutes after it boils. The mixture should thicken slightly, to about the consistency of condensed milk.
-
Step 7:
Pour the chocolate-hazelnut spread into a suitable container and let it cool completely. Serve your homemade Nutella on a slice of toast, or however you like it :) Enjoy!
- This makes about 0.5 L (2 cups) of finished spread. It seems like a lot at first glance, but in my house this jar only lasted 2 days. Help yourself — I hope you like it!
- Instead of sugar, you can use a heat-stable sweetener.
