  • With winter on the way, I want to share a recipe for a classic hot English cocktail. There are countless versions of grog — tea-based, coffee-based, spiced, with brandy — well over twenty in all. It's the perfect thing to warm you up on a long, cold evening: a small cup of this fragrant, spiced drink really hits the spot. My husband and I rediscover it every winter. You'd never guess how much alcohol is in it — the flavor is wonderfully smooth, and with two dozen possible add-ins, the combinations can be downright heavenly. There's plenty of room to get creative. If you haven't tried grog yet, now's the time. It couldn't be simpler: bring the water to a boil in a large pot. Add the sugar, mint leaves, and spices. Return to a boil, then lower the heat and simmer for about 15 minutes. Take it off the heat, strain it, stir in the rum, and mix well. Cover and let it steep for another 15 minutes. Serve right away — I like to pour grog into wide glasses.
