Cooking method

Cooking time: 20 min
  1. Step 1:

    Step 1

Gather the ingredients for the French toast. Use white bread — it makes tastier toast than dark bread. Any white bread works, based on what you have and like: sandwich loaf, round loaf, or a baguette-style loaf. Feel free to adjust the amounts to your taste.

  2. Step 2:

    Step 2

Cut the loaf into slices about 1/2 inch (1 cm) thick — no thinner, or there won't be enough surface to soak up the custard, and no thicker, or the pieces stay damp inside and may not cook through. Cut large slices into triangles, or leave them whole.

  3. Step 3:

    Step 3

Crack the eggs into a bowl and add a pinch of salt and ground black pepper. Beat the eggs with a fork or whisk until smooth, with a little foam on top. If you're making this for kids, swap the salt and pepper for sugar to get sweet dessert-style French toast that kids tend to like more.

  4. Step 4:

    Step 4

Pour in the milk and whisk again, or mix well, so the ingredients are fully combined.

  5. Step 5:

    Step 5

Pour vegetable oil into the pan (or olive oil, if you prefer, which is a bit healthier) and heat it. Quickly dip each piece of bread into the milk-egg mixture, flipping it so both sides are coated, then place it in the hot oil.

  6. Step 6:

    Step 6

Fry over medium heat, first on one side until golden, then flip and fry the other side. Cover the pan and let the toast cook for about 5 more minutes.

  7. Step 7:

    Step 7

Lift the toast out of the pan. If it seems oily, blot it on a paper towel. Serve the French toast warm with tea, coffee, or cocoa. Enjoy!
