SpongeBob's Krabby Patty
The signature recipe from a famous cartoon character. From the name, you might expect there to be crab in it — but nope! The Krabby Patty is SpongeBob's favorite dish. He works the grill at the Krusty Krab, run by Mr. Krabs, and that's who the burger is named after.
Cooking method
-
Step 1:
Gather everything you need to make a proper SpongeBob Krabby Patty.
-
Step 2:
Slice the onion into rings. To take the bite out of it, cover it with 1/2 cup of boiling water and quick-pickle it with 2 tablespoons of 9% vinegar and 1 teaspoon of sugar. You can also use red onion, which is sweeter and not sharp.
-
Step 3:
Get the patty mixture ready. Any ground meat works — beef, or a pork-and-beef mix. This time I used pork and chicken. There's no need to add anything but salt and pepper; the mixture holds together well even without egg. Shape it into one large patty a little wider than the bun.
-
Step 4:
Fry the patties in a little vegetable oil for five minutes per side, until golden and crusty.
-
Step 5:
The bun absolutely has to be a sesame-seed bun. Cut it in half through the middle and toast both cut sides in a dry skillet.
-
Step 6:
Start building the Krabby Patty. In the show, the patty goes on the crispy bun first. Mine had shrunk down to about the same size as the bun.
-
Step 7:
Rinse a lettuce leaf under running water, pat it dry, and lay it on top of the patty.
-
Step 8:
Next add a slice of processed sandwich cheese. You can swap in a thin slice of regular hard cheese.
-
Step 9:
Add a few rings of the pickled onion (the original calls for fresh red onion, but pickled is tastier).
-
Step 10:
Slice the tomato into thin rounds and lay them over the onion.
-
Step 11:
Then squeeze on some tomato ketchup.
-
Step 12:
And don't forget the mustard (half a teaspoon).
-
Step 13:
Next up in SpongeBob's recipe are the pickles. We use gherkin pickles, sliced crosswise.
-
Step 14:
And finally, cap the Krabby Patty with the other half of the crispy sesame bun.
- Enjoy!
