- This dish is spicy and a little out of the ordinary, but wonderfully tasty — perfect food for a rainy fall evening. Serve it over rice or potatoes if you like. To make the meatballs with feta, add the breadcrumbs, egg, yogurt, and half of each spice on the list to the ground meat. Cinnamon isn't usually paired with meat, but just a little — as in this recipe — gives the dish a lovely flavor. Season the mixture with salt, mix well, and roll it into balls about the size of a walnut. Brown the meatballs in olive oil; you don't need to cook them all the way through, just get some color on them. Slice the onion into half-moons, dice the bell pepper, cut the carrot into thin strips, and mince the garlic. Sauté the vegetables in a deep pan with olive oil until they turn translucent. Pour in the wine and boil hard for three to four minutes. Add the remaining spices. Now the tomatoes: if you don't have canned tomatoes in juice, you can use fresh ones — just peel them, stir in some tomato paste, and add about half a cup of water. You've got your sauce. Stir in the sugar and add the meatballs. Salt it only lightly and leave the sauce slightly under-seasoned, because the feta will add saltiness when you stir it in later. Simmer the dish for about an hour over very low heat. When it's done, stir the feta into the sauce. These meatballs are great served with olives and toasted nuts. The dish works as a hot main on its own or with a side.
