Fried Green Tomatoes, American Style

An original appetizer done the American way! If you've read Fannie Flagg's famous novel "Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe," this recipe should catch your eye. I won't claim it's a faithful copy of the one in the book, but that doesn't make it any less delicious. It's American through and through, comes together incredibly fast, and makes a great side for fish, meat, or poultry.

  • Take the semolina and mix it with ground black pepper, salt, and minced garlic. Slice the tomatoes into rounds — not too thin, though. Dredge each slice in the mixture on both sides, then fry in a skillet in vegetable oil. The tomatoes should develop an appealing golden crust. They have a fun crunch and beautifully round out foods like boiled potatoes, fried eggs, millet porridge, and the like. All in all, fried tomatoes work as both an appetizer and a side dish. For example, they pair great with beer and with harder liquor too.
