Cooking method

Cooking time: 10 min
  1. Step 1:

    Step 1

How do you make ham sandwiches? Gather the ingredients. Use whatever bread you like - absolutely any kind will do: white, a loaf, rye, borodinsky, whole grain. You can also make these with mini baguettes, ciabatta, or panini rolls. You can use a whole piece of ham or pre-sliced ham. I prefer pre-sliced - the slices of ham are very thin and look nice.

  2. Step 2:

    Step 2

Wash the cucumber, dry it, and cut it into thin slices. You'll only need a few rounds, so choose a small cucumber. Be sure to check that it isn't bitter.

  3. Step 3:

    Step 3

Wash and dry the tomato as well, and cut it into thin rounds. The thinner you slice the vegetables and ham, the easier the sandwich is to eat - thick pieces start to slide out when you bite.

  4. Step 4:

    Step 4

Make the sauce. How do you make the sauce? Mix the mayonnaise and mustard until smooth. Use a sweet mustard - it tastes better. Although if you like it sharper, use a hot brown mustard. Any mayonnaise will do; again, go by your own preference. You can also use just mayonnaise or just mustard as the sauce. And add your favorite spices to the sauce - it'll be delicious.

  5. Step 5:

    Step 5

Take a slice of bread and spread it with the sauce you've made.

  6. Step 6:

    Step 6

Lay the tomato slices on the bread. Try not to overlap them - arrange them in a single layer.

  7. Step 7:

    Step 7

Next, lay out the cucumber slices. Again, keep them flat, in a single layer.

  8. Step 8:

    Step 8

Wash and dry the lettuce leaves. Lay them on top of the other vegetables. Any lettuce will do - I have plain leaf lettuce, but it's delicious with arugula, frisée, watercress, or iceberg. That said, you can add the lettuce and vegetables as you like - leave something out or add something, like radishes.

  9. Step 9:

    Step 9

Lay the ham slices on the lettuce. Mine are thin, so I folded each slice in half.

  10. Step 10:

    Step 10

Brush the ham with the mayonnaise-mustard sauce. The sandwich is basically ready now and you can serve it as is, but I prefer the closed version - it's neater and easier to eat.

  11. Step 11:

    Step 11

Top the sandwich with another slice of bread.

  12. Step 12:

    Step 12

The ham sandwich is ready. Enjoy!

  • Choose juicy but firm tomatoes. Soft ones don't hold their shape well; as you cut and prepare them, they fall apart into a shapeless mush and ruin the look of the dish.
  • If the skin isn't tough, damaged, or bitter, you don't need to peel it.
  • It's better to make the mayonnaise yourself - it'll be tastier and healthier. See some interesting homemade mayonnaise recipes here. You can also use sour cream or plain yogurt as a dressing instead of just mayonnaise. Use them on their own or mix them with mayonnaise in any proportion you like - this lowers the calorie count of the dish.
