Step 1:
Gather the ingredients.

Soak the pearl barley in water for a couple of hours.

Cut the sausage into thin strips.

Peel the potatoes and cut them into sticks, a bit larger than the other ingredients.

Finely chop the sorrel.

Cut the pickles into strips like the sausage, scooping out the seeds (ideally).

Finely chop the onion and sauté it. Grate the carrot and sauté it with the onion.

Step 8:
Cook the pearl barley for about 40 minutes, then add the potatoes and sausage along with the tomato paste or ketchup, and cook for another 20 minutes. Add everything else 10 minutes before the end.
