Cooking method

  1. Step 1:

    Step 1

Gather all the ingredients listed and let's see how to make this beet, potato, and herring salad.

  2. Step 2:

    Step 2

First, clean the herring. Gut it by slitting the belly, cut off the head and backbone, remove the bones, and peel off the skin — you'll only need the flesh. If the herring is too salty, soak it beforehand in water or milk. Cut the fish fillet into small pieces. If you'd rather not spend time breaking down a whole herring, just buy ready-made fillets at the store.

  3. Step 3:

    Step 3

Boil the potatoes in their skins: put them in a pot of cold salted water and cook for 25 minutes after it comes to a boil, until tender — you can check with a sharp-bladed knife. Remove from the water and let cool.

  4. Step 4:

    Step 4

Boil the beet for 40-50 minutes until soft, then cool it by taking it out of the pot and leaving it in a cool spot for a while. You can check the beet for doneness the same way, piercing it in a few places with a knife.

  5. Step 5:

    Step 5

Divide all the components into two portions.

  6. Step 6:

    Step 6

Grate the potatoes, beet, and apple on the coarse side (you can sprinkle the apple with lemon juice so it doesn't brown). Peel and chop the onion.

  7. Step 7:

    Step 7

Now let's "assemble" the salad — and assembly it is, because the order of the layers matters. Lay half the herring on the bottom of the salad bowl, then top with half of the potato.

  8. Step 8:

    Step 8

Next, spread on half of the grated apple.

  9. Step 9:

    Step 9

The next layer is half the beet and half the onion.

  10. Step 10:

    Step 10

Spoon half the mayonnaise on top.

  11. Step 11:

    Step 11

    Smooth it out.

  12. Step 12:

    Step 12

Now go around again: add the herring and potato.

  13. Step 13:

    Step 13

    Then the grated apple.

  14. Step 14:

    Step 14

Finish the dish with a layer of beet and onion.

  15. Step 15:

    Step 15

Spread the remaining mayonnaise over the top and garnish with chopped parsley. Give the finished salad some time to set and soak.

  • This herring appetizer salad is a crowd-pleaser — juicy, satisfying, and full of bold, tangy flavor.
