  • A salad with shrimp, avocado, and grapefruit is a real treasure trove of the vitamins and minerals our bodies need, especially in winter. This recipe is great for anyone who wants to lose a little weight but doesn't want to — or can't — stick to grueling, health-draining diets. Start by picking out a ripe avocado. If it has cracks or dark spots, leave it — it's overripe and won't work. But if you press it and it leaves a small dent, that's exactly what you want. Cut it in half, peel it, and dice it. Sprinkle it with lemon juice so it doesn't brown. Next, the shrimp — I usually use frozen ones. Keep in mind they lose a fair amount of weight after thawing, so buy a little extra. Drop them into boiling water and let them sit for two minutes, but don't let it boil. Then peel off the shells. The grapefruit takes a little work too: remove the membranes, or it'll taste bitter, then cut it into pieces. Dress everything with mayonnaise.
