    Peel the pears, leaving the stems on. Trim a little off the base of each so the pears can stand upright.

    Pour the wine into a large pot and add the sugar, cinnamon, cloves, orange juice, and zest. Heat over low heat until the sugar dissolves completely.

    Carefully stand the pears in the pot and bring to a boil. Cover, lower the heat, and cook for 15–20 minutes, until tender. Arrange the pears on plates and serve with ice cream. Drizzle with some of the syrup the pears cooked in, if you like.
