  • I came across this rather elegant recipe on a website devoted to all kinds of cuisines. This appetizer beautifully sets off the qualities of the vodka. Everyone who tried it gave their verdict: the combination of ingredients is a real success. That said, it's better suited to ladies than to men — so judge for yourself. One more thing: if the sherry in the ingredient list gives you pause (it isn't always easy to find in stores), feel free to swap it for the more common vermouth. Dry or off-dry white vermouth works well. Personally I prefer semi-sweet, but that's purely my own whim. Cut the peeled, seeded melon into pretty, neat cubes. Peel the orange and cut it into segments, then halve each segment if you like. Cut the ham into small pieces. Now take a deep dish, lay the melon in it, scatter the orange pieces over the top, and the ham cubes over those. Slice the meaty olives into rounds and lay them over the ham. In a separate bowl, mix the warmed honey, orange juice (freshly squeezed is best) and sherry. Tear the mint leaves by hand and add them to the dressing. Pour the mixture over the appetizer. Garnish with whole mint leaves. This is the kind of dish you eat straight from the shared platter with a long-tined dessert fork (if you're among close friends).
