Kids' Birthday "Candle Bananas" Salad

Want to surprise the little ones on their birthday? This one's for you! For a child's birthday we usually try to make especially pretty, varied food. We bake car-shaped cakes, draw little faces on stuffed tomatoes, and make gingerbread shaped like stars and ducklings. And this fruit-salad recipe shaped like candles is very popular with American kids.

  • Choose bananas that aren't too curved — nearly straight. Cut each one in half. Make a mixture of powdered sugar and chopped nuts and roll each banana half in it. Cut the pineapple into rounds. On eight medium plates, place a lettuce leaf, and on top of it a pineapple round. Shave the bananas flat on one end so they'll sit in the center of the pineapple slice, like candles in a candleholder. Stick a "handle" into the side — a pretzel-shaped cookie. Drizzle condensed milk over each banana, with the drops mimicking dripping wax. On the very top, place sweetened whipped cream and crown it with a cherry to represent the flame. You can replace the cherry with a real little candle. Serve right away, or the bananas will darken.
