"Black Pearl" Salad with Prunes

Try this popular, original, and easy-to-make salad! You're probably wondering right away why it's called "Black Pearl." It's because a layer of walnut-stuffed prunes is tucked into the middle of this layered salad, much like a black pearl hidden inside a shell. That sweet note of prune and walnut is what gives the salad its special flavor. It comes together quickly and easily—even kids can manage it.

Cooking method

Cooking time: 30 min
  1. Step 1:

    Step 1

    The ingredients.

  2. Step 2:

    Step 2

First, plump up the prunes—cover them with water to soak.

  3. Step 3:

    Step 3

Grate the pre-cooked eggs, hard cheese, crab sticks, and butter. If the crab sticks are hard to grate, just chop them finely. Fluff the grated butter with a fork, and if it starts to soften, put it back in the fridge. The layers repeat, so divide the grated ingredients in half.

  4. Step 4:

    Step 4

Make a slit in the side of each prune and stuff it with a walnut.

  5. Step 5:

    Step 5

Assemble the salad. If you have a clear, deep dish, you can build the layers in it. If you're using a flat plate, you can shape a circle from paper to keep all the layers neat and visible. Layer 1: half the grated eggs, then a lattice of mayonnaise.

  6. Step 6:

    Step 6

Layer 2: half the crab sticks, then mayonnaise.

  7. Step 7:

    Step 7

Layer 3: half the hard cheese. Layer 4: half the butter.

  8. Step 8:

    Step 8

Layer 5: the walnut-stuffed prunes, arranged snugly side by side (I ran a little short, so there were some gaps).

  9. Step 9:

    Step 9

Layer 6: the other half of the crab sticks, then mayonnaise.

  10. Step 10:

    Step 10

Layer 7: the rest of the hard cheese, then mayonnaise. Layer 8: the rest of the butter. Layer 9: the rest of the grated eggs.

  11. Step 11:

    Step 11

Lift away the paper circle and decorate the salad—a lattice of mayonnaise and some walnuts look nice. Chill the salad in the fridge to let the flavors meld.

  12. Step 12:

    Step 12

The "Black Pearl" salad is ready. Enjoy—and treat your guests!
