Savory Napoleon Cake with Ham, Cheese, and Mushrooms
A Napoleon cake can make a stunning savory appetizer for a party!
Cooking method
-
Step 1:
Roll out each pastry sheet about 1/8 inch (4–5 mm) thick. Cut out a circle 9–10 inches (22–26 cm) across. Prick the rounds all over with a fork. Transfer them to a parchment-lined baking sheet.
-
Step 2:
Bake 5 pastry layers until golden, then let them cool.
-
Step 3:
Filling #1: Grate the hard cheese and eggs on the large holes of a box grater. Add the finely minced garlic and the mayonnaise, and mix.
-
Step 4:
Spread filling #1 over the first pastry layer, covering the whole surface, then top with the second layer.
-
Step 5:
Filling #2: Finely chop the ham and dill. Add the processed cheese, season with pepper, and mix.
-
Step 6:
Spread this filling over the second layer and cover with the third.
-
Step 7:
Filling #3: Finely chop the mushrooms, add the mayonnaise, and mix.
-
Step 8:
Spread this filling over the third layer and cover with the fourth.
-
Step 9:
Filling #4: Finely chop the onion, grate the carrots on the large holes of a box grater, and sauté them together until soft, then let cool.
-
Step 10:
Add the processed cheese, season with pepper and salt, and mix.
-
Step 11:
Spread this filling over the fourth layer and cover with the fifth.
-
Step 12:
Cover the cake with plastic wrap and press down gently with your hands. Refrigerate for 3 hours.
-
Step 13:
Combine processed cheese with mayonnaise and use this "cream" to coat the sides and top of the cake. Refrigerate for a full day so it soaks through.
-
Step 14:
Decorate the cake as you like. Grate the hard cheese on the large holes of a box grater and press it onto the sides of the cake.
-
Step 15:
Thinly slice the sausage, lay the slices out in a row, and roll them up into a rose.
-
Step 16:
Secure the rose with toothpicks.
-
Step 17:
Trim the bottom of the rose flat.
-
Step 18:
Arrange the sausage roses on the cake.
-
Step 19:
Cut the hard cheese into thin slices. Carefully roll each one into a little cone.
-
Step 20:
Set the cheese cones on the cake and tuck an olive into each one.
-
Step 21:
Cut the sausage slices halfway to the center.
-
Step 22:
Fold the cut ends of each slice out in opposite directions.
-
Step 23:
Arrange them around the edge of the cake, along with some olives and sprigs of dill.
-
Step 24:
Here's what the cake looks like sliced.
-
Step 25:
Enjoy, and have a wonderful celebration!
