Dutch cuisine
Dutch snacks come in various kinds of sandwiches and canapes, and food on skewers. Bread is topped with ham and fried eggs, mustard, ketchup and mayonnaise. "Russian egg salad" is popular, although it isn't actually known in Russia. On every corner they sell patat — French fries cut into thick slices. They are drizzled with store-bought sauces and sometimes generously topped with onions fried in oil.
Fish is a subject all its own when it comes to Dutch cuisine. Herring is caught here from May to July, and there's a herring festival. It is marinated in a special way and eaten in the streets as a snack — biting into a whole fish, or in a sandwich in chopped form, with onions or just a slice of white bread. The most expensive fish here is eel. There is also cod.
As for hot dishes, vegetables are cooked as stews. They are braised, steamed and sometimes baked. From meat there are sausages, wieners and meatballs. They are stewed with vegetables, especially cabbage.
If there's a soup, it's pea soup. First courses here are more often canned than freshly made.
As for sweets and desserts — chocolate, caramel, pancakes, deep-fried treats like donuts — everything is high-calorie and very tasty, with plenty of cream, butter and powdered sugar.
The abundance of cheeses is the pride of the Netherlands.
